The director and I had two very distinct visions for the show in our preliminary talks:
-Patrick envisioned three boxcars onstage with graffiti that opened up revealing scenes within.
-I had envisioned a force perspective bridge so the audience was looking down it. Like the classic scene from Stand By Me. It was important to me during the train scene, that we could see the lights coming directly at us from distance.
What came out of these original design talks is a sculptural steel / concrete set with a climbable bridge structure that surrounded three box cars on stage level with a loading platform. The middle boxcar would open up revealing a slip stage to set various scenes. We had two moving steel stair cases that could be set and used in various different positions. Flys would come in, along with other wagon units from the In1 and SR Barn doors offering variety in staging all the cinematic scenes.
